It’s not personal, it’s just business

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It’s not personal, it’s just business.  I wonder who first coined this phrase and if they’re still in business… or if they got sucker punched on the spot for that matter.  It’s a phrase that really gets me thinking about my role as Director of Account Services for White Lion.  Before getting in to that though, I want to share what prompted me to think and ultimately write about this.

White Lion was recently asked by one of our clients to weigh in with our thoughts about a Social CRM package, called Lithium.  For those of you who are wondering what the heck a Social CRM is, think Salesforce meets Forum meets Facebook and Twitter.  For some interesting reads about Social CRMs be sure to check out:

Why your Twitter and Social CRM efforts will fail

Social CRMs work to take something that was originally used as a personal way of staying connected (i.e. Twitter) and leverage it to help businesses interact with prospects and customers who discuss their brand.  Which is all well and good, if said businesses are able to interact with their audience in a personal way.  People can smell a fake – so no point communicating on a personal channel if the message isn’t relevant and genuine.

It’s interesting to think of all the interlopers that push into our communication channels. You have the door-to-door salesman trying to sell you a set of knives on Sunday afternoon, the long distance phone service that calls as you sit down to dinner, the not necessarily safe for work spam email that shows up in your inbox, or the please reset your password so your bank account is safe text message.  Fast forward and you have Facebook pages for everything from sodas to invitations.

Not all of this is a bad thing.  Obviously, social networking is here to stay and can be powerful if harnessed correctly. But it got me thinking:  as businesses increasingly try and engage with customers on a social and personal level, I wonder how much of this actually carries over in their one-on-one communications.  You know, like when a real-live person talks to a real-live person?

I know for my part, this is a crucial concept.  Providing custom web development, it’s vital that I listen closely to my clients’ goals - ask the right questions and truly try to understand.  We don’t necessarily have the best answer for all needs, and if we were to fake it and provide the wrong solution, we would hear about it quickly and nobody would benefit.

Fortunately, with a deep bench of talented programmers and designers, we can come up with some pretty slick solutions for most all of our clients’ challenges.  I take great pride in knowing our team from top to bottom is vested in the quality and success of the sites and applications we develop for our clients.  And to me, that’s personal.

A perfect score

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Every time we launch a new site, we like to get feedback from our clients to ensure our processes are sailing smoothly.  We often ask something along the lines of…

“On a scale of 1-100 (100 being the best) what score do you give the White Lion team based on the overall project?”

With that in mind, we just love the following awesomeness from Rebekah at McLean & Howard…

“I would give them a 100.  I can not think of one instance in which we weren’t happy with the team assigned to us.   Super responsive, patient and always one step ahead of us.  We are very glad we made the choice to go with you guys and we are 100% pleased with the product.  Our website could not look better! Thanks again!”

Here’s their recently launched new site…

White Lion launches custom image preview system increasing ecommerce sales by 50%

Friday, April 17th, 2009

PhotoAffections.com is a leading online provider of printed photo announcements and holiday photo cards.

White Lion was engaged by PhotoAffections.com to create a preview tool allowing visitors to upload images and fully customize their cards online.  Some of our client’s competitors had similar preview image capabilities.  At the same time, the vision was to leapfrog the competition and create what we and our client thinks is the web’s best photo preview system for designing cards.

For the techies, many online image preview systems rely on Adobe’s Flash technology.  We took a different route, ending up with 4,496 lines of PHP code, 1,472 of which was Javascript.  Why not Flash?  Our client wanted some advanced final proof image rendering that Flash is not capable of producing at this time.  Further, the number of variables being passed back and forth would have been problematic in Flash.  Finally, we felt the Flash path would have taken longer to program.

A baby is named!  I am very involved with the quality assurance for all of our sites.  The timing worked out great because I was just about to be a proud father for the third time - all boys.  My wife and I had what we thought was a winner combination of first name and middle name (middle name being a family name).  During my quality assurance review I built a birthday announcement for my soon to be born little dude.  After seeing how the name looked for the first time, I knew we had a winner.  From a user experience perspective I also knew we had a usability winner in this preview tool system - everything was so fluid and clean.  By the way, below is a screen shot of my fictional birth announcement.  During my quality review, I noted some white spacing challenge with the red box.

Check out our custom image preview system and build your own birthday announcement using the same one I did.

So, for the really impressive stuff - after launching, online sales for PhotoAffections.com increased by nearly 50%!  THAT is clearly success.  Everyone knew e-commerce conversions would increase.  At the same time we didn’t expect such a dramatic and significant increase.  My entire team is extremely proud of the outcome.

Speaking of the team, we are also excited about future projects including a complete web site redesign of the main site.
